Startups and Scale-ups

A mining-tech start-up's first engineering team

Four founding engineers agreed within 36 days

Early in 2020 a venture-backed Brisbane start-up, putting sensors and machine learning to work on mine sites, needed its first engineering team: two C++ engineers, a systems engineer to build sensing hardware, and someone to lead its data. People who write C++ close to hardware are few in Brisbane, and fewer want to bet on a start-up.

We approached engineers directly rather than waiting on ads, and sent a first shortlist ten days after the roles opened. First interviews ran back to back on a single day. All four hires were agreed within 36 days of the first brief and started in April 2020. Two years later, after a funding round, the company came back to us for its engineering manager.

Four hires in seven weeks for an AI start-up

One designer from first CV to signed offer in six days

In mid-2023 an Australian AI start-up, less than a year old, was growing its team fast. A mutual contact introduced us to the founders, and twelve days later we had agreed terms. The brief moved week to week as roles filled, the technical bar was high, and strong engineers were taking other offers within days.

We ran searches across full-stack, back-end, data, machine learning and product design at the same time, sourced nationally for a remote team, and handled interviews, references and offers so the founders could keep building. Four permanent hires followed in seven weeks. The designer went from first CV to signed offer in six days.

From first design lead to an engineering team

Seven roles filled with eight hires in two years

In mid-2017 a Brisbane software start-up that had digitised a paper-based process for the energy industry was about to be backed by a much larger corporate partner. It needed its first design lead, then an engineering team. We held the chosen design lead through seven weeks of deal approvals until the offer could be made.

Over the next two years we built the team around that role: senior engineers for a .NET and functional-programming stack, a cloud engineer, and a graduate referred by an engineer we had placed. When one hire left early, we replaced him at no extra cost; the replacement accepted an offer the day after his interview. That made eight hires across seven roles in two years.

Technology Companies and Enterprise

Scaling an engineering group in a year

20 hires in ten months

In January 2026 a Brisbane transport-technology company had more engineering roles open than its leaders could fill: people to replace, a new project to staff, and specialist platform skills to find. Its people team introduced us to the engineering leaders, and five days after our first call we sent a shortlist. Two weeks later they gave us five more roles.

Over the next ten months we made 20 hires across back-end, front-end, edge and cloud platform, reliability, security and business systems, on permanent, fixed-term and contract terms. Each shortlist came with a written view of fit and gaps. Three of the people we placed, two of them engineering leaders, now help interview our newer candidates.

Building a cyber security firm's local team

Seven permanent hires across engineering, security and sales

In late 2022 a Gold Coast cyber security firm, part of an international group, needed to build out its local team. The group's talent lead knew us and asked us to help on the ground. We started with a software development manager and a principal security analyst, reshaping the analyst brief when market feedback showed it was a more senior role than first written.

In 2023, after months of advertising for full stack developers itself, the firm briefed us: we found two from one brief, both offered the role within six weeks. Later came a security team lead and two sales hires as the business built its sales function. Seven permanent hires between 2022 and 2025.

A contract brief that became a local permanent hire

Offer accepted four weeks after the brief

A Sunshine Coast software company with a global customer base was building a new SaaS product with a small team, and needed a senior developer. The role was first scoped as a contract.

We sent the first candidates within two days and found a senior developer who already lived on the Sunshine Coast, then helped the client turn the role into a permanent position. The offer was accepted four weeks after the brief. The company has briefed us for developers three times since 2021.

Four years, five hiring managers

14 hires; contract roles filled in 8 to 12 days

In 2017 the Brisbane office of a national data and analytics company had no budget for agency fees. When a front-end role proved hard to fill, its HR team approved an agency search and called us. We sent the first CV two days later and the role was filled inside a fortnight.

Over the next three and a half years we made 14 hires for five hiring managers across software, infrastructure, data and digital teams. For a three-month developer-portal rebuild we supplied a contract team, then filled follow-on roles in eight or nine days, including a replacement when one contractor resigned. Two of the company's leaders later brought us into the organisations they moved to.

Product and delivery leaders for a national platform

Eight permanent hires over five years

A national consumer platform with a high-traffic digital product was building out the product and technology teams at its Brisbane head office. After we placed a UI designer in under a fortnight in 2017, its technology leaders began briefing us directly. In 2018, with cost controls tight, the CTO gave us its product and delivery leadership roles exclusively for a week.

We found a lead product manager, who later briefed us for a product owner, and a lead iteration manager who relocated from interstate. When an earlier candidate who had turned down the offer asked to be reconsidered, we withdrew him rather than risk the wrong fit. Over five years we made eight permanent hires. The iteration lead joined the senior leadership team and briefed us again in 2022.

A specialist on contract in under two weeks

First CV the same day as the briefing call

A large ASX-listed Queensland enterprise needed an enterprise service management specialist on a fixed-term contract, briefed through a recruitment marketplace. We took the brief by phone and put forward a qualified candidate the same day, then managed the interview, the offer questions and the onboarding paperwork.

The offer was approved 11 days after the first CV, and the specialist started the following month.

Government

Keeping a critical seat filled

Refilled three times, the latest within 20 days

A Queensland Government agency needed to keep a business-critical technical business analyst seat in its cyber security team filled after successive contractors moved on, each time within a short request-for-quote window under the State's ICT contingent labour panel.

We answered every request, ran one replacement over the Christmas break, and shortlisted five candidates within five days of the latest brief. The seat has been filled three times, the latest within 20 days of the request, and the agency has engaged at least seven of our contractors since 2025.

A senior change manager, agreed in two weeks

Profile sent the day the brief arrived

A Queensland Government-owned corporation needed a senior change manager with digital adoption platform experience for a major systems project, on a 12-month contract. We approached a seasoned change lead from our own network who was not on the market, and sent the profile the day the brief arrived. The client asked to interview within hours.

The contract was agreed two weeks after we put the candidate forward, and the change manager started within four weeks and stayed for about 21 months.

“Great candidate and fast turnaround”

A five-year supplier relationship

20 placements: 7 permanent and 13 contract

Between 2018 and 2022 we were one of the regular technology recruitment suppliers to a Queensland Government statutory organisation, taking briefs through its agency portal and, later, a recruitment marketplace. We made 20 placements there, seven permanent and 13 contract, across software development, testing, UX, cyber security, infrastructure, business analysis and desktop support.

Most briefs came from the same delivery and people leaders, who kept coming back, and one designer we placed went on to manage the UX team and brief us in turn. When a 2021 delivery program needed senior contractors, we went first to Java developers we already knew; two had offers 19 days after the brief. Contractors hired on six-month terms often stayed far longer: three ran to between 18 and 22 months.

A Chief Technology Officer for a global not-for-profit

CTO appointed 34 days after terms were agreed

A global not-for-profit technology organisation with a fully remote team needed a Chief Technology Officer to take over technology leadership from its founder, with a strong fit for a mission-led culture.

We refined the role with the leadership team, mapped the market and ran every conversation ourselves, presenting three candidates and managing interviews, references and checks. The CTO was appointed 34 days after terms were agreed and started within seven weeks. The organisation came back to us when the role next came up.

“Aaron Thomas, with his professionalism, efficiency, and keen eye for talent, exceeded our expectations in finding our new CTO. … I highly recommend Aaron for exec-level tech recruitment needs.”
