About the Role

This is an opportunity to shape the technology direction of a purpose-led organisation working to remove barriers to digital access. As Chief Technology Officer, you will lead the full product lifecycle of its flagship desktop software, combining executive leadership with selective hands-on technical contribution.

You will guide engineering delivery, product strategy, technical quality and security while fostering collaboration with a broad developer and user community. Working with executive leadership and the Board, you will translate organisational purpose into reliable, accessible software that makes a meaningful difference to users worldwide.

What You'll Be Doing

• Define and execute product vision, strategy and multi-release roadmaps aligned with user and organisational needs
• Lead the engineering team across agile delivery, including sprint planning, retrospectives, issue triage and continuous improvement
• Establish engineering policies, code quality standards, release discipline and technical risk management practices
• Provide architectural guidance, high-level code reviews and selective contributions to tooling and CI/CD improvements
• Oversee quality assurance, testing, defect management and security issue triage
• Guide technical discussions, consensus and roadmap communication across the wider developer community
• Represent the organisation and product in technical, stakeholder and industry settings
• Partner with executive leadership on compliance, accessibility audits, security questionnaires and sustainable initiatives

What You'll Need (Essential)

• Senior technology leadership experience as a CTO, Head of Engineering, Principal Software Lead or equivalent
• Proven experience leading software engineering teams and agile delivery
• Broad expertise across modern software architecture, systems security, CI/CD pipelines and release management
• Experience setting engineering standards, managing technical risk and supporting reliable production releases
• Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills across executive, Board, technical and distributed community audiences
• Strategic thinking, strong problem-solving ability and adaptability in a lean, mission-oriented environment

Nice to Have

• Experience contributing to, managing or maintaining an open-source software project
• Strong knowledge of digital accessibility standards and assistive technologies
• Experience in a purpose-driven or mission-led organisation
• Familiarity with WCAG and desktop software development
